VICE Documentary: Surviving Alone in Alaska // Story of Heimo Korth //

Alaskan wilderness survival living, home to Heimo Korth for the past 30 years.

[Authors notes:] Published on 25 Apr 2012
Heimo Korth is the last man standing in 19 million acres of Alaskan wilderness. His neighbors are polar bears and caribous. Say good bye to civilization and see how they do it in the arctic circle on the last frontier in America.

In 1980, Jimmy Carter established the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in the Alaskan Interior, cutting off 19 million acres of prime boreal wilderness from the mitts of fur trappers, oil tycoons, and would-be lodge owners alike. Only six families of white settlers were grandfathered in and allowed to keep cabins in the refuge—of them, only one still stays there year-round living off the land. His name is Heimo Korth, and he is basically the Omega Man of Americas Final Frontier.

Hosted by John Martin & Thomas Morton | Originally released in 2009 at http://vice.com

Part I: First Night (00:00)
Part II: Learning to Survive (15:46)
Part III: Life in a Cabin (19:20)
Part IV: Man vs. Beast (33:36)
Part V: Death of a Daughter (44:41)
Part VI: Going Home (49:27)

Cycling Central Asia: Peter Root and Mary Thompson tribute // Tragedy in RTW bicycle expeditions

Bicycle Touring roads of challenge, risk, serendipity and fulfillment.

Round the world: The couple died earlier this week when they were run over by the driver of a pick-up truck while riding their bicycles on a road 70 miles east of Bangkok in Phanom Sarakham, Chachoengsao

They were in their 23rd country when tragedy struck. Mr Root's devastated father Jerry today said he heard of the tragedy on Wednesday and described the pair as a ‘golden couple’ who ‘loved life’.
Thailand is well known for its perilous roads, with more than 13,000 killed and almost 1 million injured each year in accidents.

They had cycled through Europe and a number of danger areas including Iran and Afghanistan. Next to his successful career as a talented artist, Mr Root was also a lecturer in art and media.
